Wednesday, August 15 was the deadline for all candidates for Oakland city office to file with the City Clerk’s office, so we now have a full list of candidates. As a reminder, Oakland voters elect City Council members in the odd numbered districts (1, 3, 5 and 7), the at large City Council member and City attorney in presidential election years. This year is very unusual in that districts 1 (presently held by Jane Brunner), 3 (presently held by Nancy Nadel) and 5 (presently held by Ignacio de la Fuente) are all vacant. Council Member Brunner is leaving her District 1 seat to run for City Attorney against Barbara Parker, and Council Member de la Fuente is vacating his District 5 seat to run for the at large seat against Rebecca Kaplan. So the only incumbent running for City Council is District 7’s Larry Reid.
MOBN! is about to send questionnaires to all City Council candidates, and expects to publish the responses in the first half of September. Once the responses are in, MOBN! will consider whether to endorse and who to endorse in each race (MOBN!’s endorsement protocol is here). In the meantime, here is the full list of candidates for city office, as published by the City Clerk’s office:
City Council District 1
Donald L. Macleay
Gordon A. “Don” Link
City Council District 3
Larry Lionel Young, Jr.
City Council District 5
City Council District 7
City Council At-Large
Ignacio De La Fuente
Carol Lee Tolbert

A list of people who want to dominate and control our lives. Nice.
It is important that residents know that Gordon A. “Don” Link thinks Jean Quan is doing a good job on public safety.
