Oakland City Council Candidates Respond to Make Oakland Better Now! Questionnaire

There are 25 candidates running for Oakland City Council in five races — Districts 1, 3, 5, 7 and at large.  Sixteen candidates responded to the Make Oakland Better Now! questionnaire.  Those responses are now available for review here at the MOBN! web site.

Later this week, the MOBN! board will consider whether to endorse in each of these races and who to endorse.  Here’s your chance to have an impact on the endorsement process.  If you think any of the candidates in any of these races deserves an endorsement from MOBN!, comment below, comment on our facebook page, or send an e-mail to oaklanders@makeoaklandbetternow.org.  Tell us no later than Friday, September 28, 5:00 p.m. which candidates you think should be endorsed and why.   The board will review and consider all input before making final endorsement decisions.

For at large, I hope MOBN endorses Kaplan, primarily due to De La Fuente’s flawed approach to crime. He wants to “give the police the tools to do their job. I will stop studying solutions and start implementing them.” I want lower crime and good policing. The evidence for curfews and injunctions is at best mixed, and furthermore they undermine consensus support for investing in more police. I’m sure De La Fuente is sincere, but we should reject approaches that merely sound “tough in crime” but which are not evidence-based.

For District 1, I hope MOBN endorses Raphael. All of the candidates want Oakland to grow, and for trust in Oakland government to return, so that it can provide all of the services it should at adequate levels and with excellent. But Oakland doesn’t control worldwide business cycles, growth turns into substantial new revenue over many years, and trust is restored also over many years, with good governance in practice. Raphael is the only candidate with a plan to budget for hiring more police even if the economy does not do well soon, and even if Oakland voters are not convinced to approve tax measures.
